Synopsis & Film Details
Winner of the Audience Award at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, the documentary “Raise Hell” tells the story of media firebrand Molly Ivins. Six feet of Texas trouble, Ivins took on Good Ol’ Boy corruption wherever she found it for nearly four decades. The author and newspaper columnist became a celebrated national political commentator, and she was known for her razor-sharp wit. Her humor and keen criticism had both sides of the political aisle laughing and waiting to read her next column. Director Janice Engel details Ivins’s life as a progressive voice in a deeply red state, where she never shied away from attempted censorship of her work. She knew the U.S. Bill of Rights and free speech was in peril, and she presciently said: “Polarizing people is a good way to win an election and a good way to wreck a country.”

Critic Reviews
Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles TimesIvins was a one-of-a-kind commentator who was both smart and savagely funny, using a take-no-prisoners sense of humor to eviscerate those she felt abused the public trust.
Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington PostWith free speech under attack, and truth-telling seemingly in short supply, ‘Raise Hell’ offers an entertaining and bracing look at one of journalism’s least punch-pulling practitioners.
