Synopsis

To open its 2019-2020 season, Filmworks presents the independent documentary “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?” a critical favorite at the Venice Film Festival. Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini — known for his disarming portraits of marginalized populations, including his 2015 Cannes breakthrough “The Other Side” — directs the international co-production. The film tells the story of a community of Black people in the American South during the summer of 2017, when a string of brutal killings of young African-American men sends shockwaves throughout the country. A quiet but vivid meditation on the state of race in the United States, Minervini captures an intimate portrait of the lives of those who struggle for justice, dignity, and survival in a country that’s not on their side.  Assistive listening services are not available for this film.

Reviews

"Shot with grace and sensitivity in black and white, using available and natural light, ‘What You Gonna Do’ is a visual treat … a stirring, committed portrait of Black lives at a crossroads in the American South." — Lee Marshall, Screen Daily
"Cinematographer Diego Romero Suarez-Llanos shoots everything with an unobtrusive beauty, and director Roberto Minervini is incredibly adept at making these slices of life cohere into both individual stories and a broader panorama." — John Bleasdale, CineVue
