The Invisible Woman

Synopsis & Film Details

Filmworks presents the British period piece on famed Victorian novelist Charles Dickens that Variety calls “brilliantly acted, vibrantly alive, and pulsing with subtle eroticism.” Ralph Fiennes stars as Dickens, and the movie tells the true story of the great author’s protracted and clandestine affair with Nelly Ternan. Years later and haunted by her past, the happily married Nelly (Felicity Jones) takes us back in time to her relationship with Dickens, as remorse triggers her memories to resurface. Through her recounting, we witness the famous, controlling, and emotionally isolated novelist fall for her, and learn how their forbidden love affair ultimately forces her into a life of invisibility. As Dickens himself once said, “Every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.” The film captures the essence of an impractical relationship that possesses difficult consequences for the reputations of all parties involved. In a performance that The Hollywood Reporter praises as “a high point for his career,” the veteran actor Fiennes also directs. Also co-starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Hollander. Nominated for a 2014 Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
