Haute Cuisine

Synopsis & Film Details

Filmworks presents the political comedy that the Wall Street Journal calls “witty and brisk … a certain brand of French film that coquettishly flirts with comedy while sprinting in the direction of dry, sophisticated charm.” The movie — loosely based on the memoir of Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch, who served for several years as private chef to French president François Mitterrand — tells the story of Hortense, a renowned chef from the Périgord region. Hortense is astonished when the President of the Republic recruits her to be his personal cook, making her the first woman to prepare food in the Elysée Palace. Known as a no-nonsense cook with exacting standards but deceptively simple taste and technique, she quickly establishes herself amid the clashing personalities and strict protocols of the jealous all-male kitchen staff. Ultimately, her authentic food and indomitable charm win over her critics. In French, with English subtitles.
