Shoplifters

Synopsis & Film Details

Filmworks presents the Central California premiere of the Japanese family drama “Shoplifters,” winner of the Palme d’Or award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and Japan’s 2019 Oscar selection for Best Foreign Language Film. Master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda sweetly reimagines what defines a family by examining the effects of poverty. After a shoplifting session, Osamu and his son find a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to care for her after learning of her hardships. Although the family is poor, barely making ends meet through petty crime, they live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets and tests the bonds that unite them. Kore-eda attempts to redefine the concepts of “right” and “wrong” through this touching tale of a family that goes to great lengths to provide for and protect the ones they love. In Japanese, with English subtitles.
