Blancanieves

Synopsis & Film Details

Selected as Spain’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, the drama Blancanieves is a cinematic love letter to the black-and-white Golden Age of European silent film. A unique and fresh re-telling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Snow White, the movie is set in a romanticized 1920s Seville. Our Snow White: Carmen, the daughter of a famous bullfighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her monstrous, evil stepmother, Encarna (played by Maribel Verdú). Carmen escapes and joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarves, where her beauty and natural talent in the ring attracts notice from the press. The news soon reaches Encarna, who at last knows where to find Carmen, as their final showdown is set.

Critic Reviews

“Blancanieves” deftly blends cinematic antiquarianism, period atmosphere and primal emotions.
