On Friday, July 11, Filmworks invites you to experience a (double) dose of black comedy.
“The Double” tells the story of a meek, underappreciated office worker that faces his doppelganger, who slowly steals his life. A darkly comic adaptation of the Fyodor Dostoevsky novella, the film examines the theme of identity in an all-too-familiar world of workplace bureaucracy. Those who appreciate film noir will enjoy British filmmaker Richard Ayoade’s directorial take on the movie, which has a shadowy, gritty look and feel.
“The Double” features two rising young stars: Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. In a dual role, Eisenberg (“The Social Network,” “To Rome with Love”) plays both the timid Simon James, and his confident doppelganger James Simon. Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland,” “The Kids Are All Right”) plays Hannah, the copy room woman Simon secretly loves but James quickly pursues.
