Famed Italian film director Federico Fellini once said that the ideal way to see Rome “is through two pairs of eyes, one pair that knows it exceedingly well … and one that sees it for the first time, wide-eyed, open to life.”
On Friday, Jan. 10, Filmworks will open its 2014 season at the historic Tower Theatre by presenting the acclaimed Italian drama The Great Beauty. Critics say the movie, directed by rising Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, is a contemporary update of Fellini’s 1960 classic, La Dolce Vita. Show times are 5:30 and 8:45 p.m.
The Great Beauty won four top prizes at the 2013 European Film Awards – including Best Film and Best Director – and it is nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Filmworks Program Director and film scholar John Moses, in a new blog post, says The Great Beauty, “like its predecessor, [is] brimming with eccentric and extravagant images.”
