A literary evening at the historic Tower Theatre

With the British drama “The Invisible Woman” as this month’s Filmworks feature, it’s only fitting that our screening sponsor works closely with literary classics.
A Book Barn in Old Town Clovis proudly sponsors the film, which stars Ralph Fiennes as Charles Dickens and Felicity Jones as Nelly Ternan, a young woman who becomes the famed novelist’s secret lover. A Book Barn stocks a wide selection of used, rare, and out-of-print books, including multiple works by Dickens.
“Victorian writers in love” remains a popular big-screen storyline. In a new blog post, volunteer Fae Giffen explores our love affair with Victorian romances. “The era of Queen Victoria serves as the perfect setting for the bravery and fear of love,” Giffen writes. “A period that was both inventive and repressive, an era of explorers and reactionaries, an era of breathless excitement and fear.”
Yet the clandestine romance between Dickens and Ternan isn’t the only thing about “The Invisible Woman” that will captivate an audience. TimeOut London explains the movie is “only partly a romance; it’s the tragedy of Nelly’s life that makes itself more powerfully heard.”
Don’t miss this month’s Filmworks presentation of a classic love affair. Show times are 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available – you can purchase yours here.
