Synopsis & Film Details
Filmworks presents the Chinese drama “Mountains May Depart,” a candidate for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The film follows the life of an easygoing drifter, Tao, and those closest to her in three time periods: 1999, 2014, and 2025. The multi-generational story examines how China’s economic boom and a culture of materialism has affected the bonds of family, tradition, and love. Tao’s story, both colorful and moving, shows more than just Chinese history; it’s an ever-changing study of what it means to be human. Written and directed by the acclaimed master filmmaker Jia Zhangke, who is regarded a leader in the Sixth Generation movement of Chinese cinema. Starring Tao Zhao, Yi Zhang, and Jing Dong Liang. In Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, with English subtitles.
